Marine and Contract Furnishings’ founder, Catriona Young, started learning about upholstery machining and the different qualities of fabric and foam when she was a small girl, as her mother owns a soft furnishings business.
That business, Urban Sprawl, caters for the domestic interiors market, but sometimes got work on offices, boats and caravans, more by accident than design. It seemed to Cat that there was a whole market out there which was being missed, and it would be worthwhile serving it by design, rather than accident!
So - last year (2015), with technical designer Amanda, she set up Marine and Contract Furnishings to specialise in supplying made to order cushions for offices, boats, venues, surgeries and small clinics, nurseries and so on.
The idea is to create an attractive and durable product, working from clients measurements and designs, or coming on site to measure the job for them. (Please note, we’re based in London, distance can be an issue for site visits)
Where necessary we will research and advise on FR, water resistance, abrasion resistance and other technical details.
Here you can see Amanda putting the finishing touches to the cushions on our home page, and above is more of her work, shown in Esra Parr’s Gold Medal Garden at Hampton Court Flower Show.
